The bottle gourd is one of the world's oldest domesticated plants, with a history in Thailand and Southeast Asia stretching back millennia. While it is native to Africa, it spread to Asia at an early date, with two independent domestications taking place in both regions. For centuries, the gourd has been valued not only as a food source but also for its hard shell, which is used to make tools and musical instruments. These are also ideal for making birdhouses for purple martin. Wrens, chickadees, bluebirds, swallows, woodpeckers, titmice, nuthatches, screech owls, and kestrels can also be attracted to gourd birdhouses, with the specific bird species depending on the gourd's size and entrance hole diameter.  These gourds average 10" tall and 7" in diameter, and are fully dried and cured. They are also still full of seeds so you can even plant your own gourd vines next spring.
